  • Swax Lax Soft Training Balls (regulation weight, like a hacky sack to avoid rolling on pavement, not legal for games)
  • Game Balls (come in a variety of colors, these are the traditional ball you see in almost all levels of the sport)

Lacrosse Goals:

Note that goals come in various sizes. 6’x6′ goals are standard for field lacrosse while smaller nets are typically used for box lacrosse, training and pickup games, or ages 7-10 before goalies are introduced. Hockey goals do not meet official game net dimensions but do make great training goals.

Lacrosse Rules

Recommended rules by age and gender can be viewed at USA Lacrosse’s website. These rules were created to support player safety with an emphasis on introduction to the game through small-sided play.

Our program emphasizes fostering competition and representation at the community level. This means that smaller communities may participate in a modified, small-sided version of the game that is better suited to their community or program size, with fewer players.

For our program this means our 10U play up to 5v5, our 12U play 6v6. All rules are tailored to the smaller of two opposing teams, ensuring games can take place between communities of various sizes.

5v5 rules overview: 5 players per team with small open nets (creases but no goalies). No field area restrictions and played on small-sided fields. Games typically last 24-30 minutes. Best for 10U and introductory play.

6v6 rules overview: 5 field players and 1 goalie per team with regular nets. No field area restrictions for field players and mostly played on small-sided fields. Games typically last 30-40 minutes. Best for 12U and older where rosters are less than 12.

8v8 rules overview: 7 field players (2 attack, 3 midfield, 2 defense) and 1 goalie per team with regular nets. Field area restrictions for attack and defense meaning five players from each team can be on one half of the field at any given time. Can be played on small-sided fields for younger teams and up to full field for older athletes. Games typically last 40-60 minutes. Best for middle school and older where rosters are between 12 and 16 players. Potential introduction of long sticks for defense (Boys only).

Although 10v10 (Boys) and 12v12 (Girls) rules may be introduced for larger rosters, our top priority is building community-based teams over using a particular rule set, so we don’t expect to use these formats for now.
